This view shows the scratch-built flare gun port. The port was made from Evergreen stock and small springs picked up at a shop in Japan. This is a key detail that was otherwise missing. Here is the resin cockpit floor and instrument panel using kit stick and photo-etch pedals. Here, the cockpit has been painted with a basecoat of interior green and then highlighted. This shot shows the completed cockpit before assembly. All details have been brush painted with acrylic paint. Plastic was ground away from the fuselage wall with a Dremel to mount the Verlinden exposed engine.

Weathering I used Tamiya’s ever-useful XF-57 Buff to begin the exhaust staining process. The paint was thinned heavily (80 per cent thinners to 20 per cent paint), and steadily built up on both sides using an Iwata Custom Micron CM-C Plus airbrush. I lightened the Buff with a few drops of XF-55 Deck Tan and applied a few more strokes over the streaking pattern to add a little more texture. One notable feature of the exhaust staining on this machine is the vertical rain marks created when it sat unprotected in monsoon conditions.

To simulate this, I began by painting the cockpit with Testors’ Interior Green enamel. I then applied a liberal coat of Future floor wax over the green to act as a protective barrier. When the Future was dry, I applied a couple of thin coats of Testors’ Flat Black followed by some post-shading. I then added some Blue Magic plastic-polishing compound to a bottle cap and, using a toothpick with the point clipped off, I applied this to the areas of the cockpit that tended to get the most wear and tear, such as the cockpit floor, the seat tub and various parts of the sidewalls.
