Part II Critical perspectives This page intentionally left blank Chapter 3 Critical perspectives on disability and childhood Introduction This chapter focuses on how the concepts of ‘children’ and ‘childhoods’ are understood and how they affect the lives of ‘disabled’ children.

One of the most famous periods of colonialism was the period of ‘European colonialism’, which spanned over 300 years between the sixteenth and the mid-twentieth centuries. During this time, several European powers (most notably Portugal, Spain, Britain, France and the Netherlands) established colonies (sometimes also called ‘empires’) in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Many colonies have experienced complicated histories, with the ‘colonised’ populations fighting and/or negotiating with their ‘colonisers’ for the right to rule themselves (independence).

There is a need to explore the ‘variety of childhoods’ that dis/abled children experience (Levin, 1994 cited in Davis, 1998). Section 3: The psychologisation of childhood As we have seen, the new sociology of childhood rests on the principle that the ‘child’ is a social construction, a matter of social interpretation rather than simply a natural phenomenon. Despite the principle of the social construction of childhood underpinning approaches to the new sociology of childhood, it remains the case that one set of ‘truths’ about children remains largely unquestioned and undisturbed within childhood studies.
