For example, a department or program’s website may suggest that it values student support; nonetheless, students may mention lack of support services. Cognizant of the possibility that what people say or claim may not match espoused institutional values and actual practices, we use multiple data sources to strengthen our analysis. In addition to student and faculty surveys, the data from student interviews; faculty, administrator, and staff interviews; classroom observations; and archival data were triangulated.

Chapter four uses qualitative and quantitative data to understand how the culture of undergraduate engineering programs at the five Florida universities is related to the retention of women and minority students in these programs. In particular, this chapter outlines what departmental values were reported by faculty, staff, and administrators and whether or not the reported values—or espoused values—were, in fact, translating to the students within the department. Tensions between faculty teaching and research obligations are well known in academia and this chapter addresses student interactions with institutional support and how they must navigate their programs when they do not feel supported by faculty.

A discussion of program efficacy provides information on how it is calculated and defined. The second goal is to familiarize the reader with ethnographic methods. Finally, we will apply our ethnographic methods to introduce the reader to the research sites, using observational and anecdotal information to contextualize interview and survey data presented here and in subsequent chapters. In subsequent chapters, we more closely examine culture and climate as they affect student fit and student retention in engineering undergraduate programs in the state.
